Moriaty Posted 16 March , 2013 Share Posted 16 March , 2013 I have seen a reference to a soldier of the Dandy Ninth being issued with boots and half puttees in place of khaki spats and highland shoes before going off to the Western Front. Can anyone explain what a half puttee is. I assume they were for kilted regiments? Moriaty
bill24chev Posted 16 March , 2013 Share Posted 16 March , 2013 I have not heard of the term half puttee before one function of the puttee is to give extra support to the ankle. So your suggestion that they were used in lieu of spats by kilted soldiers would make sense and look neater than a full length puttee. I have a vague memory that in my time with The Gordons, in the early eighties, in certain types of kilt order puttees (Short) were worn Some better informed member will no doubt come along with a better explanation for WW1 thanwhat I can give . Joe Sweeney Posted 16 March , 2013 Share Posted 16 March , 2013 Half puttees are the normal puttees cut in half. In the Great war they were only manufactured long. Commonly done by Kilted units. Joe Sweeney
