Remembered Today:

Half puttees - what are they?

Recommended Posts

I have seen a reference to a soldier of the Dandy Ninth being issued with boots and half puttees in place of khaki spats and highland shoes before going off to the Western Front.

Can anyone explain what a half puttee is. I assume they were for kilted regiments?

I have not heard of the term half puttee before one function of the puttee is to give extra support to the ankle. So your suggestion that they were used in lieu of spats by kilted soldiers would make sense and look neater than a full length puttee.

I have a vague memory that in my time with The Gordons, in the early eighties, in certain types of kilt order puttees (Short) were worn

Some better informed member will no doubt come along with a better explanation for WW1 thanwhat I can give .

Half puttees are the normal puttees cut in half. In the Great war they were only manufactured long.

Commonly done by Kilted units.

Still wearing them with KD shorts and hosetops in the 1960's.
