Auto Posted 5 March , 2013 Share Posted 5 March , 2013 Hi, Can anyone help in identifying this brass disc? It was apparently found on the Somme near Pozieres. The obverse has the 1910 Coat of arms of South Africa (with 116 stamped top right) and the reverse has the number 522694 stamped on it. Any ideas on its use? An ID disc of some kind? Many thanks, David.
centurion Posted 5 March , 2013 Share Posted 5 March , 2013 Looks like a coin that's had the head filed down so it can be stamped and used as an ID disc. However usually the name would be stamped as well.
eairicbloodaxe Posted 5 March , 2013 Share Posted 5 March , 2013 (edited) An interesting article from the WFA website showing many different types. http://www.westernfr...-1914-1918.html Scroll a bit down the page and it suggests that many early SA discs were privately bought, so could be one of those. There's a picture looks similar but as Centurion says, it has the name on too. Can anyone do a SA regimental numbers look up? I've also had a trawl through SA coins and can't find anything like the coat of arms shown on them... they all have a date on that side, usually the words South Africa, and not the motto... Regards Ian Just had another thought... did the SA regiments have any dogs with them? Or could it be an animal ID disc, say from a horse? That might explain why no name... CROONAERT Posted 5 March , 2013 Share Posted 5 March , 2013 Can anyone do a SA regimental numbers look up? Going off SA numbers on the CWGC website, it's too long to be a regimental number. It's almost certainly not a soldier's identity disc anyway. Dave
