Remembered Today:

Identifying uniform and regiment help

Guest

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I'm new to this site and joined to try and find some answers / information about my Great Grandfather Charles Loades who was in WW1 and hope you guys can help. The attached photo is of him in his uniform and is the only photo that the family has in his uniform so I appologise in advance for its poor quality.

We know that he survived WW1 and would have been 20 in 1914 when the war broke out. One of my very old aunties seems to remember him being in the cavalry... and him talking about a horse but not anything to do with the regiment or anything else.

Any help indentifying the cap badge or any possible leads would be greatly appreciated.

Julia

I'd go with either 9th (Queen's Royal) Lancers or 16th (The Queen's) Lancers. Latter possibly as the colour of the plastron (?) front could be red.

Hello Julia,

Welcome to the forum. The photo shows Charles as a Private in a Lancer Regiment. Presumably the 12th Lancers, since Ancestry has a medal card for him, showing he landed in France on 15/08/1914. He was awarded the British War Medal, British Victory Medal, and 1914-15 Star. His numbers are shown as 3903, then L3904. Unfortunately, his service records do not appear to have survived.

Regards,

Alf McM

The reason I went for 9th or 16th, rather than 12th (Prince of Wales's Royal) Lancers is that the badge seems to have a scroll at the bottom, which the 12th (I think) didn't have, whereas the 9th and 16th did. I'm afraid I don't know the dates of arrival of the respective regiments in theatre.

These images will give you an idea of how he looked in full dress.

Or was he a 9th Lancer, as Steven says?

Agree withBroomers its unlikely to be 12th as the Cap Badge is wider and has a Scroll see examples of 16th below Im inclined to the 16th which has a "tighter" badge and the Lances are spaced further apart than the 12th

I'm pretty sure the picture isn't 12th. 9th or 16th for my money. Of course, cross-posting in cavalry was the norm, so the photo, being pre-war, may be of a different regiment to that with which he proceeded to France.

I'm with Broomers. Cannot be the 12th due to the scroll. I was in a TA unit where the PSI staff were from the 16th/5th and am pretty sure that it is not a 16th either - 9th Lancers.

Collar of a confirmed 1915 9th QR Lancer.

If my name was Coral I think I'd offer 1/2 on - always room for a little doubt.

Yes I agree, I think the balance of evidence from the shape of insignia leans towards the 9th Lancers.
