Ivor Posted 9 February , 2013 Share Posted 9 February , 2013 Nether Kellet is a small village near Carnforth, Lancashire, overlooks Morcambe Bay and all who served in both WW1 and WW2 returned alive. I am trying to research those who were from the village and faught in WW1, my great grandfather, Walter Jackson, being one of them and another, George Edwin Harrison, being my great uncle. All the names are taken from the memorial to those who served that is situated in the church. I have looked on ancestry.co.uk at the Medal Index and Service Papers for these names but not got very far with the only Service paper I came across being for John Bibby. The list is as follows: Name: Charles Bibby Year Born: 1897 Birth Place: Lower (Nether) Kellet Where lived according to either/both 1901 & 1911 Census: Bank House, Nether Kellet Occupation in 1911: Agricultural Student John Bibby 1899 Lower (Nether) Kellet Bank House, Nether Kellet Scholar Royal Engineers, 372432, no qualifying date given W Birtle W. Edward Bradshaw 1899 Lower (Nether) Kellet 1901 – Dixons Terrace, Nether Kellet 1911 – Nether Kellet Scholar Benjamin Stout Corless 1899 Burrow With Burrow, Lancashire Nether Kellet School News Boy William Court Charles Crossley 1899 Lower (Nether) Kellet 1901 – Jubilee Way, Nether Kellet 1911 - Myrtle Grove, Nether Kellet Scholar Possibly: Loyal North Lancashire Regiment, 14th Battalion, 290078, Enlisted 21 Sept 1915, Discharged 20 April 1917 due to Para 392 XVI K.R. Sickness, Action Taken List T.H. 695 (this means Charles was discharged physically unfit due to sickness, authorised by King's Regulations 392xvi. However I doubt it given he would have been only 16 years old when he enlisted. George Edwin Harrison 1884 Lower (Nether) Kellet Town End, Nether Kellet Plasterer Believed to be either: Kings Own Royal Regiment (Lancaster), Sergeant, 23629, no qualifying date given OR Kings Own Royal Regiment (Lancaster), Private, 202831, no qualifying date given W. H. Robinson H. Robinson A. Robinson W. Stott Joseph Standon 1895 Jubilee Terrace, Nether Kellet Farm Labourer As I have stated, I have tried looking at the Medals Record Index and the Sevice Papers on ancestry but I am not sure how many of those listed above actualy saw any active service given their ages and therefore how many will actualy have a Medal Record Index Card or even Service Papers. Therefore, any help in filling in the gaps would be most welcome. Mant thanks, Ivor
Guest rmcqua Posted 11 February , 2013 Share Posted 11 February , 2013 Charles Cyril Crossley was my father. He died in 1965 when I was 12, so I didn't have much opportunity to talk to him about his time in WW1. I do remember that he served in Cork at some time in his military service. i believe he was diagnised with a heart murmur, which may explain his medical discharge. He lived an active life until aged 65 when he died suddenly from a coronary thrombosis - probably as a result of the large number of Capstan full strength he used to smoke. He had another son, my brother Andrew, who also died rather young at the age of 71 in 2011. Cyril's family line lives on with my children Adam (22 tears) and Samantha (27 years). I was really interested to find this post about Cyril - thanks. Richard Crossley, ventnor, IOW.
Pharos Posted 4 November , 2014 Share Posted 4 November , 2014 Charles Cyril Crossley was my wife's uncle - her mother being Cyril's sister, Ruth Esther Crossley. She not only remembers Cyril but also Andrew, his son, and Gwen, Cyril's wife. In view of Richard Crossley's reply to this thread we now have additional pieces to put into our Family History jigsaw. Many thanks, Brian O. Marginson
