Terry Carter Posted 7 February , 2013 Share Posted 7 February , 2013 I found a nose cone couple of years ago on the Somme. It has ALCO stamped on it. Is that an indication of which factory it was made? Terry
RobL Posted 7 February , 2013 Share Posted 7 February , 2013 I believe so, ALCO would be the American Locomotive COmpany, they also later made locomotives both narrow and standard gauge for the British military railways (War Department Light Railway and Railway Operating Division) I have to say i've never seen one of these nose cones for sale (do you mean the protective nose cap or the shell fuse?), they must have been very common and presumably every shell had the cap fitted
TonyE Posted 7 February , 2013 Share Posted 7 February , 2013 I think the poster means a fuze rather than a protective cover. A quick search of the Forum for "ALCO" would have produced plenty of threads with the answer. Regards TonyE
Ken Lees Posted 7 February , 2013 Share Posted 7 February , 2013 I have one, too. It is a No.85 fuse, found on the Somme near to Factory Corner.
Terry Carter Posted 8 February , 2013 Author Share Posted 8 February , 2013 Thanks for the replies. Yes I see it is a no.85 fuse. It still has a splash of orange paint on it. regards Terry
