Anthony Pigott Posted 1 September , 2004 Share Posted 1 September , 2004 From S.-D.'s diary, extracts by Ballard: "At 1.30 a.m. Germany cavalry with 40 guns reported moving on Bethisy. Soon after dawn Uhlans busy everywhere. 1st Cavalry Brigade was caught watering. Horses stampeded and guns reported lost - recovered later on and 12 German guns captured. To help III Corps, who were too far back and also engaged, Gleichen's Brigade advanced and Cuthbert had a rearguard action covering Crepy. He had 40 casualties, but punished the enemy badly. We marched on to Nanteuil. Men did not settle down until far into the night. But G.H.Q. got alarmed as German cavalry were reported between them and us, so we were ordered to make a night march towards the Marne. Great difficulty in communicating with Pulteney."
