Remembered Today:

Badges ID

John Milner

Recommended Posts

Below is a photo of Ernest Frederick Leonard Derrick, born 1899 in the Somerset/Wiltshire area.

I think, from his cap badge, that he was in the Wiltshire Regiment.

However, can anyone identify the badges on his uppper left and right tunic sleeves, and the badge above the chevron on his left cuff.

Also he appears to be wearing riding breeches/jodpurs.

Any thoughts/ideas on the above greatly appreciated.

He is certainly a mounted soldier in that, besides the breeches, his puttees are bound below the knee, rather than at the ankle. The badge abover the inverted chevron (good conduct stripe) looks like cross swords, and could for the best swordsmen in twenty men.

His cap badge is certainly not the Wiltshires. Could be Yeomanry.

Surpising he is not wearing spurs.

Thank you for your replies, I was also surprised that there are no spurs evident in the picture.

Any ideas about the badges on the upper left and right sleeves?

Thanks again.

My gt.grandfather was a private in the 10th Hussars and I possess a number of "studio" photos of him. He isn't wearing spurs in any of them.

Martin.

I've contacted you off forum (in reply to your email). If you are interested I basically know his entire service history (especially his activities 1899 -1902 in South Africa).

Dave.
