DavidK Posted 1 September , 2004 Share Posted 1 September , 2004 My interest in the sinking of the Russell is prompted by my Grandfater, John Kinloch, being one of the survivors of the mining of this pre-Dreadnaught Battleship off Malta on 27 April 1916. There are several accounts of the sinking on the www and some mention that several survivors brought ashore later died of gas poisoning. This was attributed to gas given off by burning cordite. What other harmful product of combustion of cordite is there, other that CO and CO2? My Grandfather did not suffer this fate - he lived 'til 1965 and died at 85 years.
