Ian,

It means that your grandfather was a Pioneer Sergeant in the 11th London Regiment when he qualified for the 14-15 star. His MIC stated that he first entered a theatre of war

on 10th August 1915, in this case the theatre was Egypt. His original service number was 83.

If you have access to Ancestry you can view his MIC, there may be service papers as well if you are lucky, haven't had a look myself.

He was entitled to a Silver War Badge, as he was discharged with sickness.

The SWB roll shows that he enlisted 1/4/08 and was discharged 30/4/1919, aged 42.

Ian,

Your Grand Father was Frederick C. Hobbs. He was the Pioneer Sergeant in the 1/11 Battalion, London Regiment. The Battalion was amongst those who landed at Suvla Bay, Gallipoli, in August 1915. They were evacuated from there in December of the same year and moved back to Egypt.

The Battalion War Diary is available. Have a look at http://1914-1918.inv...howtopic=181974 .

The battalion was actually known as the Finsbury Rifles.

Cheers Andy.

Oh, buy the way, welcome to the forum.
