Paul Dorrell Posted 31 December , 2012 Share Posted 31 December , 2012 On the iconic Kitchener recruiting poster the rate of pay for a private soldier on enlistment was quoted as 7s a week. In additional there were allowances quoted for married men with a family - e.g. a wife and 2 children - 17/6 a week + she would get a deduction of 6d a day from her husbands' 1/- a day pay. Were these rates also applicable to a Reserve List gunner in the RGA when he rejoined his Battery? Or was he on a different payscale, like the cavalry? If so, what was that payscale please? David B Posted 31 December , 2012 Share Posted 31 December , 2012 Paul, The Long, Long trail has a complete copy of army pay rates as at 1914. Link below. http://www.1914-1918.net/pay_1914.html
Paul Dorrell Posted 31 December , 2012 Author Share Posted 31 December , 2012 Thank you David - I didn't know that the pay rates were published there. So, "one-and-tuppence-h'apenny" a day for an RGA gunner in 1915. But did he also get those advertised entitlements for his wife and kids? I'm guessing he would, but I'd dearly love confirmation if anyone can supply it. Paul
