Steve, you may have this already but if not for your records Lt Charles Nye had been a ranker with the 3rd Inf CEF before being commissioned into the 8th Northants and attached to 1st Bn. His family were from Aldershot.

I did briefly look at Charles Nye, partly to differentiate him from James Nye (unrelated) in the same battalion. An article regarding his letters is online here:

He was related to Roger Bannister's wife (yes, that Roger Bannister)

Off on a tangent, but this is the Arch/Archie (Charles' brother) referred to:

http://www.achart.ca/articles/york/general_nye.htm

(Vice Chief of the Imperial General Staff in WW2 - I note that the latter link, having copied his WW1 career from elsewhere, puts him in the Leicesters rather than the Leinsters)

This afternoon, after six years since I first started researching local man Frank Tucknott, I finally got to pay my respects to him in Caterpillar Valley Cemetery, laying a poppy and photograph of him. Only linked by location, not blood, as he was born where I live and tended the gardens near where my children go to school, but still poignant. Then up to High Wood and a recce of Clarks Trench, which I will explore in next couple of days. Happy to have finally got to pay my respects, almost a centenary since he fell. I know I'll be back. Best wishes all, Jim

Great stuff James, the completely misnamed but hugely evocative Caterpillar Valley is one of my favourite places; I can tell that the next few days will be special, hope the weather holds.

Have you a link to the full map? I have tried to get one with this much detail on trench names. However, I need a view of Clark's Trench a bit further West. Thanks

Much obliged sir. I am due to have an article published in my old school's magazine on Charles Nye and get some detail on the Clark Trench fight with the Germans on 16 August 1916 is good for that.
