sajackr Posted 18 December , 2012 Share Posted 18 December , 2012 Hi, The "Constuction of horse lines" is mentioned several times in the WD of the 68th Coy MGC. Can someone kindly tell me what this involves? Many thanks Sajackr
Steven Broomfield Posted 18 December , 2012 Share Posted 18 December , 2012 Erecting, at its simplest, a rope line to which horses could be attached by a head rope. Prevents them running away too easily while at the same time allowing a degree of movement.
nfh249 Posted 18 December , 2012 Share Posted 18 December , 2012 From the war diary and photographs of the East Riding Yeomanry in the Middle East, they constructed wooden shelters for the horses (seen in the background in this, admittedly poor quality, photograph) Cheers, Neil. sajackr Posted 18 December , 2012 Author Share Posted 18 December , 2012 Steven, Neil Thanks for your replies. Intitially I thought along the same lines as Steven, but as it was mention daily 24th - 29th Dec 1916 I began to think about practicing line formations with horses and limbers. Neils reply seems to fit the bill for the diary entries Regards Sajackr
Admin kenf48 Posted 18 December , 2012 Admin Share Posted 18 December , 2012 This rather nice water colour was for sale in a local auction earlier this year - failed to reach its reserve which was a little too rich for me!- but so atmospheric, and a good example of the type described in post 2 - the title is 'War Horses Resting on the Western Front' Artist George Denholm Arthur (26 x 32 in) Ken
