1st ANZAC Posted 11 December , 2012 Share Posted 11 December , 2012 Here's a great tall tale but it must have some truth to it. My Grandfather, HICKS, Private Montague Matthew, 7th Bn, Royal Dublin Fusiliers - Oct 1915 - Aug 1917 - WO95/4836 [10th Division, 30th Brigade] told me of when he was wounded at the Salonica front on 23 September 1916 he was admitted to 43rd General hospital, Salonika. Then on a Hospital Ship in the Med – Monty had told me about a U-boat that had torpedoed the ship and the torpedo hit but failed to explode but the force was enough to knock him out of his bunk. Warrants further investigation? Sure it does. 23 September 1916 - wounded and then on the 08 October 1916 it is recorded that he was in a hospital in Malta, with Gunshot Wound L shoulder So my question is....what was the Hospital Ship and how do we find out? With dates matching sometime from the 25th Sep - 07th Oct.1916. What do we know about the attack and the failure of the torpedo? __________________ Cheers Darren
sotonmate Posted 24 December , 2012 Share Posted 24 December , 2012 Darren You should explore ADM137 in the National Archives Catalogue - it has a series of ledgers listing such incidents.
