Beselare Posted 28 November , 2012 Share Posted 28 November , 2012 I know that the 18th Kings were attacking Montauban on 1st July and took Glatz Redoubt. However, I cannot find the war diary for them on this day. I know it is numbered WO 95/3144/4 but it has not been digitalised yet. Can anyone help please? I am particularly interested in any trench co-ordinates showing their starting point and how far they got. Also, any reference to the death of 2/Lt. Gordon Brewer Golds. Many thanks in anticipation. Stephen Nulty Posted 28 November , 2012 Share Posted 28 November , 2012 Graham Maddocks states "The 18th Battalion, as part of 21st Brigade, was to attack from assembly trenches to the east of Talus Bois, a jutting finger of woodland which pointed towards the German trenches below the south-eastern corner of the fortified village of Montauban." They captured and held the Glatz Redoubt, and the 16th and 17th Manchesters followed through and captured Montauban
Beselare Posted 29 November , 2012 Author Share Posted 29 November , 2012 Hi Stephen Many thanks for that information. It looks straight forward, even without trench co-ordinates. Regards Bob
8055Bell Posted 2 January , 2013 Share Posted 2 January , 2013 Bob, Have a look at http://www.hellfirecorner.co.uk/hartley/jh.htm to see the story of the 17th Manchester Btn. who followed 18th KLR with the 2nd Wave. John Hartley may know more about the first wave as well. There are some good trench maps on line. Tim
Beselare Posted 2 January , 2013 Author Share Posted 2 January , 2013 Hello Tim It is really amazing what you can miss on the internet. Thank you very much for the information - it is just in time as on Saturday I am visiting the area with the grandson of 2/Lt. Golds.
