Hi

I'm looking for some help to identify the uniform my g Grandad is wearing. He was born in 1865 and the picture was taken around 1896/7, unfortuantely this is the best I can get of his cap as the oriignal is a bit fuzzy.

He is wearing an Essex Regiment Cap Badge and a typical WW1 uniform. Are you certain it is of Great Grandfather???

It was taken a lot later than 1896/97 but it is possible that he is serving during WW1 in a Volunteer Battalion (a post 1916 VTC Home Guard equivalent).

I am certain other Forum members will help.

I think this is a bit later than 1896. There are different versions of service dress before the Great War but this style looks like one which originated in the early 1900s. Somebody will come along and tell you exactly, which version. To me the picture looks as if it could have been taken just before or during the war.

The photos cannot pre-date mid/late 1914 at the very earliest, as he is wearing the belt off the 1914 Pattern Equipment in the second photo.
