Remembered Today:

HMS Armadale Castle

In researching the death of Able Seaman Harry Brooks (Barnoldswick, formerly West Yorkshire) I have photocopies of the ship's log for 21/22 October 1918. The ship was in the grip of the flu epidemic and Brooks fell victim to it on 21st. I can e-mail to anybody interested.

Could anybody provide a photo of HMS Armamdale Castle/know where there's likely to be one?

Thanks

Steve

Just browsing for some hospital ship posts and I came across your post which I assume relates to "Armadale Castle"

Best place for ship photographs is the National Maritime Museum - website www.nmm.ac.uk

They have an online photograph catalogue. You can't see the photographs, but you can order them. A search on Armadale comes up with the following prints they have in their collection

ARMADALE CASTLE (Br) 50.1 1903

Passenger liner

Union-Castle Mail S S Co Ltd, (D Currie & Co, managers)

P18731 (4) C In Cape Town harbour, a copy negative.

P18732 (7) C Under way. A copy negative.

P18733 (3) C In Cape Town harbour, a copy negative.

P18734 (4) B In Cape Town harbour.

P18735 (6) B Under way.

P18736 (5) B In Cape Town harbour.

P18737 (3) C Under way.

P18738 (4) A In Cape Town harbour.

P18739 (7) C In Cape Town harbour.

Hope this helps albeit many months since the original post.

Don,

As you know Armadale castle was an armed vessel and was involved in stopping and searching ships in addition to its transport duties. It is likely the death of Cuthbert derives from one of these incidents.

Dear Steve,

Are you researching men from Barnoldswick in general? I have a Wesleyan Church Roll of Honour which lists members of the church who were serving. Have been looking for a good home for it. It is a large 2 ft x 1.5 ft heavy card "For King & Country, Our Roll of Honour, Please remember in prayer the following who are on active service". A fair number were killed.
