horatio2 Posted 15 October , 2012 Share Posted 15 October , 2012 I am not sure I would agree with Jerrold that "in the case of the Howe Battalion ... the casualties were extremely light". The Howes lost some 75 men k.i.a. or d.o.w. and some 180 casualties overall. A rather more full description of the battle is given in "Boom Ravine" by Trevor Pidgeon (Pen and Sword Battleground Europe series). He (rather disparagingly) entitles Chapter 5 "Minor Operation on the left : 188 Brigade of 63rd (Royal Naval) Division". He notes that: "... the casualties ... had been mainly caused by the artillery bombardment before Zero. ... Howe Battalion has fewer losses [than 1/RMLI] - 180 killed and wounded - but the overall price paid for this 'minor operation' was heavy. The Germans paid a high price too. Their accounts reveal that the greater part of a battalion was destroyed or captured here."
