Wikipaedia tells me there was a sanitorium built in Landour and used from 1827, which was used as British Military Hospital specialising in tropical diseases from early in the 20th century.

Would this imply Henry Chaplin died from a tropical disease or was the sanitorium used to treat other afflictions during WWI?

Hi Aradgick,

I know this was left quite sometime ago now but I was wondering if you ever found out the answer to your question or any other details relating to Henry Chaplin? He's a relation of mine and I would love to know any information you might have on him or the Chaplin Tree.

Kind regards,

Samantha

Welcome to GWF.

There are a number of pension cards at the Western Front Association / Fold3 if you search using Chaplin 23852

Sadly Henry appears to be just one of three Chaplin brothers for whom a dependant's pension claim was made by mother, Annie, and father, William - respective addresses: The Stables, South Hill Park, Brockwell (1926) and later Keepers Cottage, South Hill Park, Brockwell (1944) it seems.

Henry, 23852, Bedfordshire Regiment

John, 225546, Machine Gun Corps

George, 23528, Northamptonshire Regiment

There is a burial record image on Findmypast which indicates that Henry Chaplin died of enteric fever.

Definition: "When enteric fever is caused by Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi, it is known as typhoid fever and when due to S. enterica serovar Paratyphi A, B, or C, it is called paratyphoid fever".

The Register of Soldiers Effects shows that he died in Moosoon.

His war gratuity was £3, so he hadn't been in the army for very long.

Samantha,

I see there is some information about Henry in other replies.

I have a little about his life before enlisting, but minimal information about his military service. He was a member of a Sussex Territorial Battalion when war broke out, but may have been considered unfit for active service, I have a lot more information on his brothers George and John.

Regards,

Andrew
