david west Posted 27 September , 2012 Share Posted 27 September , 2012 I found (yet another) book in my late fathers collection titled "Machine Gunner 1914-18" from 1973. Inside the cover is written L.J Hackworthy (29722) 165 Coy, 55th Btn. Machine Gun Corps. B.E.F France. What can the experts dig up ?? Regards, David

tipperary Posted 27 September , 2012 Share Posted 27 September , 2012 His service records dont seem to be on Ancestry maybe destroyed 1940 and he does not show up as a casualty on Geofs so appears to have survived.john
Sandie Hayes Posted 27 September , 2012 Share Posted 27 September , 2012 There's a possibility he wasn't British. The only document for Lester Hackworthy on Ancestry is his MIC. Sandie

IPT Posted 27 September , 2012 Share Posted 27 September , 2012 I'll type this quickly before Sandie gets him. Leslie John Hackworthy, born 1897, 35 Cleveland Street, St Thomas, Exeter on 1911. His wedding in 1918; "Corpl. Leslie J. Hack worthy, Batt. Machine Gun Corps. B.E.F , Frauce, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Hackworthy, of St. Thomas, Marion " Unfortunately, this is his son in ww2; http://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/2480260/HACKWORTHY,%20CLIFFORD%20LESLIE
Sandie Hayes Posted 27 September , 2012 Share Posted 27 September , 2012 Cheeky! I don't think like a sleuth, it has to be exact for me to find anything!!! Sandie
Sandie Hayes Posted 27 September , 2012 Share Posted 27 September , 2012 He died in Exeter in March 1975. (BT took his name out of the phone book 6 years later!) His son, Clifford Leslie, was killed in WW2. He was on board HMS Barham when it was hit by U boat 331 on 25.11.1941.
