St MARY`S CHURCH REGISTERS.

The following figures were recorded from the registers held at Purton Museum and Chippenham. The registers were for marriages, baptisms and funerals that took place at St Mary`s. You can see a spike in baptism`s in 1916, it is a documented fact that there was a national rise in births as married men with children were called to the colours later than single men who had no children (See the introduction to the Military list for further details regarding classes / groups for Enlistment). Another spike in 1920 reflects the effect of post War Military demobilization. Purton is no different to any other village, town of city. What is interesting is figures regarding funerals, they decrease from 1917 onwards, seemingly unaffected by the outbreak of Spanish flu in 1918.
