doogal Posted 20 August , 2004 Share Posted 20 August , 2004 Hi, I've been reading the article on the WFA site about Ambulance Trains. It states that on arrival in England, soldiers would be sent to one of the 196 "receiving stations" in the UK before being ultimately sent on to hospitals. Are there any documentary remnants of these stations - if so, what kind of detail? Can anyone add some more detail about these stations, as I've no idea what they were, whether they were purpose built, or have they been included in our hospital list already? rgds doogal
Sue Light Posted 20 August , 2004 Share Posted 20 August , 2004 Doogal I'm sure that these were 'stations' as in 'railway' where the trains would stop along their route to off-load casualties. Because the bed situation was always so tight there was rarely the possiblity of taking a whole train load to one place. So, for instance, Waterloo would have been a receiving station in London, and Brighton station for Sussex + another 194 nationwide! Sue
