James Blonde Posted 4 August , 2012 Share Posted 4 August , 2012 A chap I know has posted this picture showing a family relative (with sash sitting down, a Sgt, Byrne) He is looking to i.d. the unit and location, I have a feeling its in South Africa, just prior to WW1, or on service in Africa during W.W.1 but, would like opinions please. battiscombe Posted 4 August , 2012 Share Posted 4 August , 2012 could well be SA (the medals are South african wars QSA KSA); my gut feeling wouldbe not Khartoum or Cairo ,[where there were a few units). Cant make out the badges on men in front

battiscombe Posted 4 August , 2012 Share Posted 4 August , 2012 I am not epert but those look like older style Khaki Drill uniforms - as used in early 1900s. I cant recognise the badges. I would post details as another query about the uniforms and badges as someone ['Grumpy'?] can probably identify and date them quite closely..clearly dating after Kings South Africa medal was issued - post 1902.. helmets also look an old style -
Krithia Posted 4 August , 2012 Share Posted 4 August , 2012 i would guest 1907, give or take, and possibly the Northumberland Fusiliers due to the coloured pugaree stripe (if red) on the helmets. Ignoring the Wolseley helmet in the photo, this pattern of 'Victorian' Foreign Service helmet I thought was superceded by the Wolseley in 1904. Location I would put as India. battiscombe Posted 4 August , 2012 Share Posted 4 August , 2012 I see 1st Bn Northumberland Fusiliers was at Gharial in India in 1909. might this be Frederick W Byrne, later RQMS?
