MikeyO Posted 30 July , 2012 Share Posted 30 July , 2012 Good afternoon all I don't know if anyone would be able to help, I recently acquired a British Army Tunic (very cheaply) and am having trouble identifying it so it'd be great to tap some of the knowledge on here. The tunic has a few unusual features, the two lower pockets appear to have been added after manufacture with the original lines pockets inside snipped away (hopefully that will show up on the photo if my description doesn't make sense!). The collar is stand up and inside there are traces of the manufacturers label, similar size location to the 1922 version of the 1902 pattern tunic but no text left. The buttons are brass general service. If anyone has any ideas I't be great to hear them! Thanks, Mike
4thGordons Posted 30 July , 2012 Share Posted 30 July , 2012 It has been converted into a US pattern tunic by the looks of it. Britain did supply (and manufacture) tunics for the AEF but I have not seen one converted from a British SD Jacket before. If it is made from a 1922 pattern as it appears I assume this is a costume piece. Chris Here is an example being worn. Note shape of pocket flaps also. And an example - although this one is lined. MikeyO Posted 30 July , 2012 Author Share Posted 30 July , 2012 Thanks Chris, I do have a US tunic in my collection so I suppose the idea should have twigged! (pic below) It's missing the should patches of the 22 pattern but I suppose these could have been removed (though I can't see a change in colour of the material or evidence of stitching). I've also attached a photo of the remains of the manufacturers label
4thGordons Posted 30 July , 2012 Share Posted 30 July , 2012 Your US tunic (great display BTW) is a slightly different pattern (with internal breast pockets) I can never remember the years of changes on US Tunics. I have a WWII Australian produced 1922 pattern jacket which does not have rifle patches (or pocket pleats) so there may be some variation possible. MikeyO Posted 30 July , 2012 Author Share Posted 30 July , 2012 Cheers Chris, I recently invested in a load of mannequins and it makes all the difference to the display. There's a lot to look out for eh? Amazing how many variations exist. Just out of interest my US tunic is dated March 1919
