JOVE23 Posted 11 July , 2012 Share Posted 11 July , 2012 Hello all, I am trying to reconstruct the appearance of my great grand uncle's WWI Victory Medal. According to the official documents, he was at the following battles: Alsace, Fismes, Juvigny, Verdun, Bois de Chene My research has shown that American WWI Victory Medals had clasps on them for battles. What clasps would these battles refer to? My mildly educated guess is Oise-Aisne and Meuse-Argonne. Additionally, Max was awarded the equivalent of the Silver Star (silver star citation) for his actions on 5 Oct. 1918, that lead to his death. I am curious to see how this would be displayed on both the medal itself and on the corresponding ribbon. Here are my guesses: Please let me know if I'm on the right track! I would like to build a shadow box one day for his medals. Best, Justin

JOVE23 Posted 11 July , 2012 Author Share Posted 11 July , 2012 John, Thanks for that stuff. I hadn't seen it! I was mainly wondering if I had 1) Named the clasps I created properly and 2) Had associated the battles Max was in with the correct overall offensives. 4thGordons Posted 11 July , 2012 Share Posted 11 July , 2012 (edited) I have a list of these somewhere -- also a list of divisions/entitlements (general Which division was he in? Here are the main Battle clasps (I am not sure where I got this from - possibly a 1919 National Geographic) Cambrai: May 20 to December 4, 1917 198 Days of Combat - 3 Regiments Somme Defensive: March 21 to April 6, 1918 16 Days of Combat - 1 Regiment Lys: April 9 to 27, 1918 18 Days of Combat - Units from 4 Divisions Aisne: May 27 to June 5, 1918 9 Days of Combat - 2 Divisions Montdidier-Noyon: June 9 to 13, 1918 4 Days of Combat - 1 Division Champagne-Marne: July 18 to August 6, 1918 19 Days of Combat - 4 Divisions Aisne-Marne: July 18 to August 6, 1918 19 Days of Combat - 8 Divisions Somme Offensive: August 8 to November 11, 1918 95 Days of Combat - 3 Divisions Oise-Aisne: August 18 to November 11, 1918 85 Days of Combat - 3 Divisions Ypres-Lys: August 19 to November 11, 1918 84 Days of Combat - 4 Divisions St. Mihiel: September 12 to 16, 1918 4 Days of Combat - 13 Divisions Meuse-Argonne: September 26 to November 11, 1918 46 Days of Combat - 25 Divisions Vittorio-Veneto: October 24 to November 4, 1918 11 Days of Combat - 1 Regiment Defensive Sector: For participation in any 'minor' battle that is included within any of the specifically 'named' Combat Clasps: Dates of eligibility April 6, 1917 to November 11, 1918 (584 Eligible Days) There were also "service clasps" (geographic areas) but it is my recollection these could not be worn as well as combat clasps. 4thGordons Posted 11 July , 2012 Share Posted 11 July , 2012 The usual entitlement for the 32nd Division is Aisne-Marne Oise-Aisne Meuse-Argonne I think. The history of the 32nd Division is available online for free download There is also a history of one particular company of the 127th (Co. C) available here Chris

I have darn near every bit of info that can be found for this man! I sent you an e-mail just now regarding some other information that wouldn't be on-topic in this thread. old joe Posted 12 July , 2012 Share Posted 12 July , 2012 The usual entitlement for the 32nd Division is Aisne-Marne Oise-Aisne Meuse-Argonne I think. He may have also qualified for the Defensive Sector clasp as well. My grandfather served in the 80th Division and while some sites will say that they were entitled to the St. Mihiel, Meusse-Argonne and Defensive Sector clasps, other sites include the Somme Offensive clasp in their entitlement.
