Please can any one give me some information on the King George Merchant Navy ship sunk 8th December 1916 and what happened to the crew. The only information I have been able to find on a King George was the battleship but this is not the one .

Thankyou

The KING GEORGE was a 3852 ton steamer owned by Glasgow King Shipping Co. Ltd (managers: J.A. Walker & Co.). She sunk 700 miles E1/2N of Cape Race by the German raider (armed merchant cruiser) MÖWE on December 8, 1916 while on a voyage from Philadelphia for Manchester with general cargo that included 600 tons of gunpowder.

The crew of KING GEORGE and the other ships MÖWE had sunk on her second cruise through December 13 were sent back to Germany on the captured steamer YARROWDALE.

Best wishes,

Michael
