Certificate of Service

I have been trying to decipher a copy of my Grandads Certificate of Service in the RN. He signed up in 1902 and served until 1925. I have a query concerning some entries in the Ships Name column on the cerificate. There are some entries that seem to have two names, one of which is placed in brackets as shown below. I would be grateful if anyone could enlighten me as to what it means.

Blenheim (Saracen)

Tyne (Cheerful)

Hecla (Saracen)

Many thanks

Tony

The first names were depot ships during WW1 and those in brackets were destroyers.

Presumably the first named were the base depot ship for each destroyer.

Tony,

HMS Blenheim, Hecla & Tyne were Destroyer Depot Ships as Terry has said.

HMS Cheerful was a Destroyer, 370 tons of 1897. She was sunk 30 June 1917 by a mine off Shetland Is.

HMS Saracen was a Destroyer, 980 tons of 1908, She was sold 22 Oct 1919.

She bears battle honour for WWI: "Dover Patrol 1914-18"

I have been reading RN Service Certifcates for many yrs, e mail me if you need any thing else "translated",

Yes, the first name is the depot ship where the pay ledgers and accounts were held and administered. The name in parenthesis is the name of the ship in which he would have served. A destroyer did not have a paymaster to do the necessary paper work for the pay and victualling of the ship.

Hi Gordon,

3WR is his rate - he was a Writer 3rd class. RN is Royal Navy.

HMS Hecla was the name of the Buncrana Naval base on the eastern shore of Lough Swilly, County Donegal, Ireland.
