Pierre Posted 24 June , 2012 Share Posted 24 June , 2012 Hello all, I am intrigued by this postcard. Why does the cavalry man wear an ANZAC hat in 1914 ? Were they already worn at the outbreak of war ? Many thanks. Pierre
Lancashire Fusilier Posted 24 June , 2012 Share Posted 24 June , 2012 Pierre, There is a very good thread running at the moment - Highland Division slouch / bush hats early 1915 You will see that the Slouch Hat/ Bush Hat / Anzac Hat type was in use prior to, and during WW1. wainfleet Posted 25 June , 2012 Share Posted 25 June , 2012 Pierre The caption says 1914, but clearly that isn't correct. The houses do not look very French or Flemish, and this photo was almost certainly taken on manoeuvres in the UK a few years before the war, probably about 1905-10 when the slouch hat was still in use. This is a simple instance of a photographic service using any picture they can find, without regard for accuracy. Regards, W.
Joe Sweeney Posted 25 June , 2012 Share Posted 25 June , 2012 To further W. comment the mounted may be Yeomanry. The TF (and Yeomanry) retained the SD Hat (Official Name), Smasher, Slouch etc far longer than the regulars and some units until 1914. But like W I don't think this is France but probably taken during the TF Annuals. Joe S.

Chris_Baker Posted 30 June , 2012 Share Posted 30 June , 2012 Judging by the architecture I would guess that the photograph was taken in southern England. I wonder if we can identify the place - and from that, the unit?
