T8HANTS Posted 24 June , 2012 Share Posted 24 June , 2012 Below is a portrait of Lt Col C.W. Brannon M.C. T.D. of the Isle of Wight Rifles. Could someone with a better knowledge of medals than I can muster please confirm the last two are the KG V silver jubilee medal, and the Territorial Decoration, or is it the retitled Efficiency Decoration, or if I am wrong on both what are they? Jim_Grundy Posted 24 June , 2012 Share Posted 24 June , 2012 I think you've got a 1937 coronation medal there, rather than the 1935 jubilee. They are hard to differentiate in images such as this (might be wrong but I can't see any writing on the rim in this photograph) but there are some photographs of both of them. What do you think? 1935 jubilee: http://www.24carat.co.uk/images/193525thjubileemedalgeorgevobv400.jpg 1937 coronation: http://www.neatemedals.co.uk/medals/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/3/7/37coronation.jpg I think the other medal is the GV Territorial Decoration: http://www.northeastmedals.co.uk/britishguide/territorial_decoration/gv_territorial_decoration_ob.JPG
Old Owl Posted 24 June , 2012 Share Posted 24 June , 2012 Hi Gareth, You are correct, the first is the Jubilee Medal 1935 and the second is the definitely the Territorial Decoration GV. The Efficiency Decoration GV has the letters GRI in the centre and as such is noticeably different. Robert Edit: I think on closer inspection, as Jim correctly points out, that the first is the Coronation 1937 and not the Jubilee 1935!!
T8HANTS Posted 24 June , 2012 Author Share Posted 24 June , 2012 Hi Jim and Robert Thank you both for your thoughts. I thought the Jubilee medal was the more likely as I was swayed by the fact that KG V was Col in Chief of the battalion, and he served with it as a very young man. It has also been put forward as the reason why the Rifles were Brigaded with the 5th Norfolks, KG V other pet Territorial Battalion, of All the Kings Men fame. It is however very difficult to make out any writing around the rim as Jim states, and unfortunatly I was locked out of the KG V TD link. rflory Posted 24 June , 2012 Share Posted 24 June , 2012 Lt Col C W Brannon received the Territorial Decoration on 18 September 1931. The other medal is the 1937 Coronation Medal which he received as Lt. Col., MC, TD, Commanding the 8th Bn, The Hampshire Regiment (T.A.). He did not receive the 1935 Jubilee Medal.
