what period saw the Cameron Highlanders using red/ green(?) diced hose tops, and when if at all did they stop? I would guess at 1915 along with all the other austerity measures...

The 79th took red-green hose into wear sometime in the 1840s. The Cameron Highlanders then wore this hose in full dress through 1914 and on ceremonial occasions in service dress between the wars until 1939. The colored hose was reinstated about 1951 or 1952 with the new #1 dress and also in #2 dress on some parades. After the 1961 amalgamation the pipers of the Queen's Own Highlanders continued to wear the red-green hose.

many thanks... I surmise that even for walking out the order of the day for mos of ww1 would have been khaki hose tops.?

I think that is a correct surmise.
