Please could any forum member give me details as to where the 1st Garrison Btn, Ox and Bucks, were located in India between 1916/1919. Basically, why were they there? This is one area of the Great war that I have absolutely no knowledge of and would appreciate any information.

Looks toi be a clear pattern pointing to where they were stationed.

John, Thanks for posting the list, Trimulgherry seems to be mentioned a lot. Would this have been the location of the Garrison ? I would imagine that most of these deaths were through illness, ie Malaria, as opposed to Kia.

It certainly looks as if that wwas where they were stationed for the bulk of their time in India. All of these are in Soldiers Died as Died - implying disease or accident.

The FIBIS Fibiwiki page “First World War”, section “British Army Territorial Force troops in India” gives some background information.

Trimulgherry is a suburb of Secunderad. There is a FIBIS Fibiwiki page Secunderabad.

Some of the deaths in 1918 and 1919 may have been due to the flu epidemic

Cheers

Maureen, Welcome to the forum. Thank you for giving the links, I will go through them as part of my research. My man arrived home from India in Feb 1919 and within a week displayed flu like symptoms and died. You could well be correct with the flu epidemic, I was thinking of malaria as one of the symptoms was 'flu like'and was rife in that part of the world.

Dear GWF enthusiasts,

It is interesting to note that no single Officer was amongst the deaths recorded by oxandbucks.

As noted elsewhere in this Forum, Lieut. Eric (later Eryk) Agard Evans, wounded with the 2/5 Warwicks in France, was shunted off to India to join the 1st Garrison Battalion, Ox and Bucks Light Infantry in 1917 - but joined the Indian Army in 1918: apparently fit enough to be attached to 40th Pathans. He was subsequently Assistant Recruiting Officer, Peshawar, 1920-21 (Capt.).

Kindest regards,

Kim Lindsay.

Kimberley John Lindsay.
