Hi John, have just joined this wonderful site and did not know about the National Roll of the Great War. I'd love to know more about my grandad who served in both wars. I've put as much as I can below:

Herbert Alfred HOLLIS

Born 14 May 1893 Rotherhithe London

Served Kings Royal Rifle Corps then latterly Machine Gun Corps

Captured (Somme?) date unknown

Spent approx last 2 years of the war in captivity in Bavaria, where he was forced to work in the salt mines, living in a field with other prisoners.

May have made Lance Cpl, poss mentioned in dispatches

I'd love to know where he served, where he was captured. When he was finally liberated he spent some time in a military hospital suffering from neurocenia and shell shock, and weighed just 6 stones.

Hope he appears in your list!

regards

Hi Lee. Could you glance in your book for my grandad? He served in KRRC then MGC, mentioned in dispatches (I believe). Captured (Somme?) then prisoner in Bavarian salt mines till end of war. DoB 14 May 1893, he lived in South East London. Hope this is enough?

thanks in anticipation :)
