Beselare Posted 27 May , 2012 Share Posted 27 May , 2012 I am hoping that there are some specialists on the Forum for the 1st Dragoon Guards. I am trying to find a book or a website covering the history of this unit in WW1. I have searched the web and found out their basic movements (India, Marseilles, etc) but I need much more information. Are there any recommendations? Many thanks Bob
Steven Broomfield Posted 27 May , 2012 Share Posted 27 May , 2012 I'm far from an expert on anything, but what was the nature of the enquiry? As you probably know, the 1st DG (more commonly known as the King's Dragoon Guards) were with the Lucknow Brigade from the outbreak of war until late 1917, at which point they left for India. I have the regimental histories of the 29th Deccan Horse and 36th Jacob's Horse, who both served in the Lucknow Brigade with them.
Beselare Posted 28 May , 2012 Author Share Posted 28 May , 2012 Hello Steven I have a friend who lives in the UK and her grandfather (Sgt. Arthur William Askew) served throughout the war with the 1st Dragoon Guards. She asked me if I could recommend a book (or article) that would give her a broad description of where he might have served. Bob
Steven Broomfield Posted 28 May , 2012 Share Posted 28 May , 2012 OK, I'll have a look in the Indian histories I mentioned later. Unfortunately there appears to be no regimental history of the KDG for the GW, and neither of the Indian cavalry divisions produced histories. Mind you, this is am pretty hot website - just be careful not to get confused: it refers to both the 1st Dragoon Guards (KDG) and the 2nd Dragoon Guards (Queen's Bays) http://www.qdg.org.uk/index.php
barney5042 Posted 2 June , 2012 Share Posted 2 June , 2012 I have several books concerning the Dragoon Guards. Michael Mann's "Thr Regimental History of 1st The Queen's Dragoon Guards" covers the entire histories of the King's Dragoon Guards and the Queen's Bays, with about 30 pages devoted to World War I. It's available on abebooks.com. She should contact the curator at http://www.qdg.org.uk/ Barney
Beselare Posted 2 June , 2012 Author Share Posted 2 June , 2012 To Steven and Barney Thanks very much for your help. The website you recommended, qdg.org.uk has a Digest of Services section which gives an excellent overview of the KDG's movements year by year. I was not aware of the book, so I am going to pass that information onto my friend. Bob
Archie1 Posted 16 November , 2012 Share Posted 16 November , 2012 The war diary for the KDG's is held at The National Archive at Kew.It covers from their mobilization in August 1914 until they left the Western front to return to India in 1917. Ref: WO95/1174,though be aware, there is the ongoing task of digitzing the war diaries & at present the KDG diary is one of them.I viewed it last week but had to go to a different room.
