Mid button 0.680 inch or 17.2 centimetre used for Tunic? c. Small button 0.468 inch or 11.8 mm used for Cap side button? Doc In British military dress regulations, the diameter of buttons is measured in 'Lines' or 'Lignes' (from the French and abbreviated to 'L'). 40L = 1 inch = 25.4 millimetres The four main size ranges are: Large 35 to 40 lines (22 to 25mm) Medium 30 to 34 lines (19 to 22mm) It was the custom at one time to have smaller 'Medium' sized Buttons on the epaulets. Small 24 to 29 lines (15 to 18mm) Mounted Buttons are also of this size. Gorget 20 to 23 lines (13 to 14mm) More recently Gorget Buttons have also been of the Small Size. Small about 14mm diameter used for cap and mess dress waistcoats Medium about 20mm diameter used for most uniforms including ORs SD Large about 25mm diameter used for the great-coat and the front fastening of Guards scarlet tunics and Officers Service Dress jackets.
