The small GS button, approx 18mm diameter. To which part (s) of the uniform was this attached? Cap sides only?

Thanks

The cap buttons were generally around 14mm

18 mm or .75" tunic

Large approx 24-25mm or 1" were coat buttons, or sometimes seen on centre of tunics.

I am sure that there will even be someone who can explain why some of the buttons have three holes, and one four!

Thanks for the pic

Three buttonholes = German buttons.

Just to clarify, now I have the mic out of the garage:

a. Large button 0.915 inch or 23.2 centimetre used for Great Coat?

b. Mid button 0.680 inch or 17.2 centimetre used for Tunic?

c. Small button 0.468 inch or 11.8 mm used for Cap side button?

In British military dress regulations, the diameter of buttons is measured in 'Lines' or 'Lignes' (from the French and abbreviated to 'L').

40L = 1 inch = 25.4 millimetres

The four main size ranges are:

Large 35 to 40 lines (22 to 25mm)

Medium 30 to 34 lines (19 to 22mm) It was the custom at one time to have smaller 'Medium' sized Buttons on the epaulets.

Small 24 to 29 lines (15 to 18mm) Mounted Buttons are also of this size.

Gorget 20 to 23 lines (13 to 14mm) More recently Gorget Buttons have also been of the Small Size.

Small about 14mm diameter used for cap and mess dress waistcoats

Medium about 20mm diameter used for most uniforms including ORs SD

Large about 25mm diameter used for the great-coat and the front fastening of Guards scarlet tunics and Officers Service Dress jackets.

The GS cap button pictured above was found on Hawthorn Ridge is 7/16" which is about 11.8mm but others I have are 9/16" or around 14mm.
