Intresting picture and i will be keeping an eye on the price.

At the time there was a lot of pressure on men not in uniform to enlist. Wearing the SWB and the wound stripe showed he had done his duty to the white feather brigade.

The soldier on the left looks to be wearing sevice chevrons on his sleave, prehaps the picture was taken towards the end of the war. Like most pictures i doubt if there are any details on the back of who they are :(

I was under the impression that from 1918 (?), the wearing of wound stripes on civilian clothing was authorised. I'm afraid that I don't have my notes to hand at the moment to add anything more specific.....

Ed is correct.

AO 343 (Nov. 1918) section 7

"Retired officers, ex-officers, discharged soldiers, nurses and others who, whilst serving, became entitled to wear on uniforms or service dress the distinction in dress for wounds, may, at their own option, continue to wear it on plain clothes after leaving the Service..."

I have a photograph of a wedding, which shows the groom wearing both wound stripes and overseas chevrons on his civilian suit.
