Hi,

has anybody any ideas on this makers marking in a cap? I googled but came up with nothing...the crown in the coat of arms looks to my (untrained, continental) eye more like a QVC than a QC...Thanx for your help!

I think that perhaps 'Harding' is a type, or pattern of cap, rather than a makers mark, just as a racing trilby might be known as an 'Epsom'. Normally a makers mark would say &Son or Co Ltd. A 19th Century Hatters stock list for Lock's and Herbert Johnson might help you locate who the maker was.

View this newspaper page from 1921. Zoom in - about half way down on the right there's an advert for the Van Wert Clothing co. It says "ask to see the Harding Cap". This, to my mind, reinforces Frogsmile's suggestion that it's a style, rather than a maker.
