Remembered Today:

West Yorkshire Regiment in India?

Hey

I am looking to try out whether the WYR was in India in the period of around 1911 - 1920. George Hancock (my other half's great grandfather) was in the West Yorkshire Regiment and the only detail I have is from the 1911 census (which provides regiment and rank) and his marriage certificate, which identifies his place of residence as Strensall barracks (in 1912). I have been unable to find out any more information (including military number) but it is believed he was posted in India and that they had a child born out there (who subsequently died, so no name is known).

Does anybody have any idea where I could try to find out? I have tried ancestry and fmp to find George but failed so far.

Many thanks

Rhonda

The 1st Battalion returned to England in 1911 from India where they had served from 1899. From 1907-10 they were stationed at Kuldana, in the Murree Hills..

The 2nd Battalion went to India in 1919.

You could try to obtain a service record. See the FIBIS Fibiwiki page British Army, post 1921 service http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=British_Army
