The entries are one of the same person. To give some background, Hugh enrolled as a solicitor of the Supreme Court in the UK but volunteered for service in South Africa on the outbreak of the Boer War, joining the 67th Company, Imperial Yeomanry as a trooper. Attached to the Rhodesian Field Force, he subsequently spent nearly two years on active service with the mounted infantry.

The 18th Battalion was made up of:

75th (Sharpshooters) Company, raised 1900

He remains in Utrecht, Natal, South Africa as a solicitor and is an MP in the first Parliament following the Union of South Africa. He re-joins his old unit, the 5th Middx in 1915 (attached to the 4th Middx in Kemmel-Vierstraat). He then joins the Borders for around 6 months (hence uniform) but am struggling to find what battalion he served with in the Borders.

Interesting topic... A couple questions of clarification for the RFC experts: I've seen unit designations in references being both "37 Kite Balloon Section" and "37 Balloon Section" - are these the same unit? Or different type units? Was there a name change somewhere along the line? Are balloon officers always observers for artillery?

Balloon Section and Kite Balloon Section are the same

Balloon Sections overseas were organized into Balloon Companies (usually 2 Sections) and Balloon Wings (3-5 Companies)

37KBS and 30KBS were part of 3 Balloon Company, 1 Balloon Wing.

19KBS was also part of the Company from mid until late 1917, and in mid 1918 21KBS joined the Company.

They primarily acted as observers for artillery and reporting enemy locations and movements.

Thanks! I appreciate the confirmation.
