Guest Philipkemp Posted 2 April , 2003 Share Posted 2 April , 2003 My Great Uncle, Lieutenant Edward Russell Loft served in the R.A.M.C. from 1893 to 1921 being awarded the M.C., Mons Star, and Legion of Honour for his war service with the No.1 Field Ambulance Unit in France; his service no. was 10166 and he also served in South Africa from 1902-07. On discharge he kept a Public House, The Crauford Arms Hotel, in Wolverton, nr. Towcester, and subsequently was Steward at a club in Emsworth, Hampshire. Last trace of him was when his wife died in 1935 at Emsworth. I cannot find any record of his death in civilian records or Army Pension records. Can anyone help? Kate Wills Posted 2 April , 2003 Share Posted 2 April , 2003 Philip, Clicking the link below will bring you to the Northamptonshire Association for Local History website, where you will find contact details for member societies, including the Wolverton and District Local History Society which meets monthly at Stony Stratford. In addition, the site has a section where you can post queries such as this. Good Luck!! http://www.northants-history.org.uk/events.html
Tom Tulloch-Marshall Posted 7 April , 2003 Share Posted 7 April , 2003 Philip - your information was from an MoD letter dated 24/7/95 - yes ? MoD have a habit of not spotting things / not understanding file entries / simply missing things out. - I'm not saying they have necessarily done any of those things in this instance, but there is information on papers relating to ER Loft RAMC which would indicate two occasions when the Ministry of Pensions were involved with his case. The first was 2/5/33 when some unknown correspondence was generated, and secondly 28/1/66 when his files were withdrawn from MoD Hayes, being returned there 3/2/66. There *might* be a clue there - possibly closure of the pension due to Capt Loft's death. Might give you a target period to look for a death registration - first quarter of 1966. - Regards - Tom
