Paul Reed Posted 10 August , 2004 Share Posted 10 August , 2004 Hi David, On the eve of the Battle of the Somme, the High Command were not happy about some of the battalion commanders in several units, 31st Division being amongst them. They therefore replaced them with regulars or Indian Army officers. Guyon therefore replaced the c/o of the 1st Bradford Pals only a short period before the battle, which must have been an unenviable task. He was actually a substantive Major, and acting Lieutenant Colonel - is it Lt-Col on his medals? He was therefore killed at Serre on 1st July, and not at Beaumont Hamel where his old battalion (2nd RF) was. He had served with them at Gallipoli in 1915, by the way. His photo appears in my book Walking The Somme; I don't have access to a scanner at present to do you a scan. Maybe someone else will, or I will do it later. Superb group - well done. It has gone to a good home. I will be at the Thiepval Memorial tomorrow and will leave a poppy cross for you.

Paul Reed Posted 10 August , 2004 Share Posted 10 August , 2004 Well done Ian - I thought I had his MIC here, but I don't. I will see if I can find the original of this photo, and do a better scan when I am back with the scanner. His name is on the Royal Fusiliers panel of Thiepval, by the way.
