dv-367 Posted 10 August , 2004 Share Posted 10 August , 2004 This may seem a stupid question, but I recently came across this South Lancashire cap badge and was wondering if this would be the badge my great-grandfather would have worn while serving with the 6th Bn South Lancashire Regiment. He was killed on 11th January 1917 at Kut-al-Amara..... would the Egypt lettering have been on the cap badge at this date or was it added later? Martin B Posted 10 August , 2004 Share Posted 10 August , 2004 Yes, 6th South Lancs would have worn the honour 'Egypt' on their badges. In the past only the 4th and 5th Btns wore badges with the scroll blank.
CROONAERT Posted 10 August , 2004 Share Posted 10 August , 2004 David. The "Egypt" has been on the South Lancs badge since it's inception as the South Lancs Regt.. It's a battle honour dating from 1801 (same as the Egypt and sphynx on the East Lancs cap badge, the Gloucester's and the Manchester's collar badges, etc.) Dave. dv-367 Posted 10 August , 2004 Author Share Posted 10 August , 2004 Thanks for clearing that up for me! I'm afraid this is all new ground for me so forgive my ignorance. Dave would you have an example of the uniform at the time? .... I'd like to see what he would have been wearing. Regards David
