German Tanks

Just curious.. while reading another thread about French tanks, I started thinking I know almost nothing about German tanks. Didn't want to hijack that thread, but what is there to know about what the Germans used? I always thought the majority of the tanks the Germans used were captured allied machines.

The Germans only had one tank they produced theirselves that was used in combat the A7V Strumpanzerwagen about 20 produced and from what I have read no two are the same. They also had a few prototypes by the end of the war and some under conctruction they are the A7V/U the K-Wagen a real monster if it was ever compleated and the LK I and the LK II Baised on the british Whippet design. They of course used some captured British tanks in combat also.

andigger,

There are a number of books that do a decent job of describing the A7V German tanks. It is said that they functioned well when they were used, but that due to the lateness of the German effort to build a tank, they were not produced in sufficient numbers to achieve the mass attack that the high command considered the only way that they would be used successfully.

Chip

The only surviving German A7V Sturmpanzerwagen is Nr 506 'Mephisto' which was disabled after it ran into a large shell hole near Villers-Brettonneux on 24 April 1918. It was recoverd by the 26th Battalion AIF and the Tank Corps on 22 July.

The tank now resides in the Queensland Museum in Brisbane; a photograph is below.

Cheers

Gareth

All,

We had an A7V here in the States at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds, but it was scrapped during WWII. I wonder whose bright idea that was! I have a black and white photo of it taken in the 1930s. It looks like it was just sitting out in a field.
