WW1 Service numbers

Hello all,

I am hoping someone can assist me with a query.

I have recently purchased a 1914 Star trio to a member of the Royal Sussex Regiment.

His service number is L-7860.

My query is - what does the 'L' stand for (if anything)??

Many thanks in advance!

In this particular case, it simply denotes that he was a regular soldier. (The L can mean different things in different regiments though).

As in Layer for Pte Peach RFA.

Ian

It was my understanding that 'L' in the RFA indicated a wartime volunteer who had enlisted under 'Limited' engagement i.e. duration of the war.

Also, there is no such rank as Pte in the Artillery, as I am sure you know.

Ian, you fascinate me with this L for Layer. Given that a soldier's number was his, more or less for life or death, and given that a number was issued on enlistment, and therefore before any qualification, proficiency, trade etc., I am really surprised. And what happened to L 12345 Bloggs J. on promotion to a level when he no longer could serve as a layer?
