ptdickens Posted 23 April , 2012 Share Posted 23 April , 2012 My grandfather, Albert Dalton, 16995, Sgt, Loyal North Lancs was awarded the Military Medal in 1917 'for gallantry and distinguished conduct in the field'. I am trying to find out what his act of gallantry was. I have found his entry in the London Gazette but his is just one in a long list of names with no clue to his action. Can anyone suggest where I can find out more? Thanks.
John_Hartley Posted 23 April , 2012 Share Posted 23 April , 2012 Three possibilities. Firstly, the battalion war diary may mention the award, giving the date of the action. If not, you could look back at the diary to see if there's an obvious action that probbaly applies. it would usually be around 3 months before the London Gazette date. Secondly, if there is a published battalion or regimental history, there may be mention The other possibility is that the award was mentioned in his local newspaper. I'll start with the newspaper archive.
myos Posted 23 April , 2012 Share Posted 23 April , 2012 There are a few pages of his Service Record on Ancestry, but no details of his M.M. Andy
myos Posted 23 April , 2012 Share Posted 23 April , 2012 Ancestry have managed to slip in another man's service record in the middle of Albert Dalton's so I missed this initially. This simply says that he was awarded the M.M., but not how. He was in the 6th Battalion. Andy
