Remembered Today:

Can't find record of WW1 campaign medals

Hi all,

Can someone please advise me exactly where I can find a link to an individual's WW1 campaign medals record?

My Grandfather was Edward Largey k 26917 RN

I know he was awarded the DSM and was mentioned in despatches, but for the life of me I cannot find the link to his campaign medals record at The National Archives. Am I just being very stupid or is the link hard to locate?

Thanks.

Paul.

I don't believe there is a link at the National Archives website to medals awarded to RN personnel. You should, however, be able to find it at the paid service ancestry.co.uk.

service and distinguished themselves in tha

Lieut. Crutchley reports: "I find it impossible

to select any other names, as all behaved,

equally well."

Sig. David Heale,

Sto., 1st Cl., Edward Largey, O.N. K.26917 (Ch.).

SUPPLEMENT TO THE LONDON GAZETTE, 28 AUGUST 1918. 40089

To receive the Distinguished Service Medal.

Thank you for the quick replies. Chris, I searched FindmyPast but the only Edward Largey I could find died in Malta in the 1890s, not my Grandfather.

I have been trying for quite a while to locate this record, without success.

Somme, thanks for printing the info re Edward's DSM and MiD.

Can anyone else help?

Paul.

There are no online RN medal records at Findmypast: they are at Ancestry. The link that ulsterlad has given above is to his service record.

Thanks Ulsterlad. I have downloaded this record. It was on it that I discovered Edward had been awarded the DSM. I also ordered his engagement (enlistment) papers from the Fleet Air Arm Museum. Neither set of records show details of his campaign medals. I suppose what I am looking for is the Royal Navy's equivalent to the Army's Medal Index Cards, but finding them is easier said than done.

Thanks anyway.

Paul.

There is no naval equivalent to the Army MICs, so stop looking. You can only go straight to the Naval Medal Roll (ADM 171) - off-line at Kew, on-line at Ancestry.

Thanks Chris for getting back to me again. That was silly of me. You said Ancestry, I processed it in my head as FindmyPast. Stupid or what!!

Thanks Horatio. Your info ties in with what Chris said.

Paul.

 Oops. Thought there would have been something on that :D

As Chris and Horatio said, his entitlement is definitely recorded on Ancestry.

Hi Paul

I have found Edwards Naval Medals and Awards Rolls on Ancestry.com

Largey Edward sto.1. K 26917 st v b.

And thats it, so I would say that st is star v being victory and b British War Medal

There is another Medal roll for Mentioned in Despatches,

And a ships roll which comfirms ship as Vindictive.

Dave
