Paul Reed Posted 7 August , 2004 Share Posted 7 August , 2004 Given the high prices these days, I don't really collect medals anymore, but I do look for 'local' casualties from time to time; ones that are 'local' to me here in Courcelette. I got this one in a trade a month or too back, so that made the purchase feel a little better! It came with his original collar dogs still on the uniform material (see below), roughly cut from the tunic and a letter describing his death and burial... which makes it a mystery that he is on the Vimy Memorial. There are several unknown 31st Bn in Courcelette British Cemetery, maybe he is one of them? His details from CWGC are: Name: GAY, AUBREY HENRY Initials: A H Nationality: Canadian Rank: Sergeant Regiment: Canadian Infantry (Alberta Regt.) Unit Text: "C" Coy. 31st Bn. Age: 39 Date of Death: 15/09/1916 Service No: 79224 Additional information: Son of the late Henry and Nellie Gay; husband of Frances Gay, of 921, 18th Avenue East, Calgary. Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead Cemetery: VIMY MEMORIAL

Paul Reed Posted 7 August , 2004 Author Share Posted 7 August , 2004 Thanks for that David - pity the plaque has some verdigris problems. I am at a loss as how to treat it without removing a layer from the plaque's surface... if indeed, I should do anything at all?
