Shell fuses & shrapnel - what are they

Can you post the diameters of the shrapnel balls ? That would assist with identification.

The left fuze at top appears to be marked "85 I" i.e. Number 85 Mark I - it was a US-manufactured "Time and Percussion" fuze used used by the British for shrapnel. I think what you have is both the fuze itself, and the socket which connected the fuze to the shell : you can check this by measuring the diameter of the threads : the threads of the fuze proper are 2 inches, those of the socket would be a bit larger. Diagram showing socket arrangement and how central tube screwed into fuze base : http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:18pdrShrapnelDiagram1.jpg

There are a complete set of drawings for No 85 at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:No._85_Fuze

The right hand fuze is FUZE, TIME and PERCUSSION No 80 MARK VII (L) the L signifing Land use. If the shrapnel ball is half an inch in diameter it will be from a 18 Pr and there were 41 to the pound.

Rod, John - many thanks. The shrapnel balls are half an inch in diameter, as you suggested.
