Guest 23867218 Posted 15 February , 2012 Share Posted 15 February , 2012 Hello All I am trying to discover the Regiment this soldier belongs to, the family who own the photo are from Crewe. I think he may be in the Cheshire Bantams but the photo is not too clear. Two things strike me from the photo. 1. He does not seem to have any rank and yet he is carrying a swagger stick? 2. On the shoulder flash it could be the Cheshire Regiment flash but there seems to be something else above it? Any help with this would be very much appreciated. Thanks. The family name is probably Adams.
bigjohn Posted 15 February , 2012 Share Posted 15 February , 2012 Photo would help! The swagger stick is just a normal walking out acessory of the time he did not need a rank to have one.
Admin Michelle Young Posted 15 February , 2012 Admin Share Posted 15 February , 2012 And his name. BTW I'd remove your email address from your post, unless you want lots of spam! Michelle
centurion Posted 15 February , 2012 Share Posted 15 February , 2012 1. He does not seem to have any rank and yet he is carrying a swagger stick? Probably a walking out cane as carried by many ORs when 'in their Sunday best' so to speak http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=114985&view=findpost&p=1097429
pioneecorps Posted 15 February , 2012 Share Posted 15 February , 2012 Hi I can see now you have a photo, it could be a T as in Territorial, above the brass titles, the cap badge looks like the Cheshire Regiment. Regards. Gerwyn
ATNOMIS Posted 15 February , 2012 Share Posted 15 February , 2012 Hi He could be a Territorial in the Cheshires. Not to put a spanner in the works it might be East Yorks. Tha Badges are very similar. Bantam I don't think so as they were formed in Nov 1914. I don't think T would have been on the 15/16/17th Batt shoulder title. John_Hartley Posted 15 February , 2012 Share Posted 15 February , 2012 Can't tell from the low-res photo if that's a Cheshire cap badge or not.
FROGSMILE Posted 16 February , 2012 Share Posted 16 February , 2012 Yes I believe it is Cheshire regiment cap badge (the star and scroll are just about discernible) and agree that the shoulder title appears to be for a Territorial Force battalion, with a T above the curved CHESHIRE. centurion Posted 17 February , 2012 Share Posted 17 February , 2012 As I understand it the Cheshire Bantams (the first bantam unit) were a pals battalion - ie volunteers but not a territorial unit. So he could be a Cheshire terrier or a Cheshire bantam but not both.
