Remembered Today:

Where do I look?

I have no desire to become a medal collector (but I only thought I would make a few posts on this forum!) but if I wanted something specific - say a trio to an RFA casualty, how on earth would I start looking? And be safe from being ripped off. I have had a quick look at the British Medals Forum but that looks a bit daunting.

Roger,I would recommend joining the BMF,not at all dunting, you would be very welcome and would receive good advice. There is also a list of reputable dealers available and some members do have trios and other medals for sale on the forum.

Murrough

Hi Roger

Dip your toe in the water over there. A very friendly and helpful bunch of very knowledgeable people.

As already advised above, the site has a good list of reputable medal dealers. If you have queries around a potential purchase just ask the questions on your mind.

Be warned. It is a slippery slope to a lifetime of poverty preserving these items of history and the stories of the men who went through so much to get these medals.....

I don't know if it's a good place to buy but your local auction rooms may still have them for sale. For example this is my local auction in Eastbourne for a sale coming up on Friday week.

https://www.easylive...gory=6BFA3798A4

It is possible to bid online and the home site easylive auction has links to other auction houses.

http://www.easyliveauction.com/

Fortunately I don't collect anything although my daughter did buy me this t-shirt for xmas http://www.howies.co...-chocolate.html no idea what she meant…

If you look round the site you can usually find the hammer price for previous auctions but perhaps one of the experts can tell you if it's a good place and whether or not the prices realised are a rip off or not.

Anyway looks like you're in luck no RFA this monthwhistle.png

I would also recommend the British Medal Forum.

There are many members there who are also members here - but don't let that put you off.

It is an excellent site for beginners as the experienced members are happy to help, probably because they realise that without new collectors, the hobby which they are so passionate about, will wither and die eventually.

Once you have taken a little advice on board you will feel more confident about searching the market.

Good luck,

Ken

Hi Roger,

We occasionally get medals at our general auction sales but we haven't had a trio for some time. Our local specialist dealer is https://www.dixonsmedals.co.uk/ who have a good reputation and have always been helpful when I've spoken with them.

If you dip your toe in the medal collecting water beware as it can become addictive and expensive. But as a starter the cheapest 1914/5 trio will be for around £75 for a corps such as the Royal Field Artillery. Line regiments will be more expensive, cavalry and yeomanry's quite a bit more and casualties expect to pay £200+. But a bit of advice. The medals will be named and if you go for a more unusual name you will enjoy researching it through censii, Google searching, getting a copy of pension records and so on. A navy trio will have service records available giving home address. For most collectors it is the man behind the medals that is fascinating and brings them to life.

Oh, alright,

Yes, as above there are numerous members here who are also members of the BMF (I recognise a few forum names on this thread).

As a plug, I have had dealings with Ken Lees, above, and have purchased quite a few medals from Jim Strawbridge (next post up). These are the guy's with the experience and knowledge. On the BMF there are hundreds more just like them.

As for the example you have mentioned, once you know where and how to get supporting evidence to confirm the legitimacy of the trio, you could search anywhere.

Cheers Andy.

Thanks to all for your advice, it really is appreciated. I will start "surfing" the BMF to get a feel for things.

To all of the above posters:

You rotters! I thought I would have a quick look and spent about 2 hours! There is a good search engine on the BMF. I found a 1915 Trio and Plaque to a man from the 5th Yorkshire Battalion who was killed at Ypres in May 1915 and he would have fought alongside my paternal Grandfather (see my signature). £400 - a bit beyond my price range and not what I was looking for, but I can now see how one can be tempted. If I had the cash, I would get the set, no question.

I'm 60 in June - perhaps the time to get my first medals. (FIRST - what am I talking about - that should read my one and only set)

I am a relatively new collector and a member of the BMF and just discovered the search engine. It is a very valuable tool.

I am mostly reading and learning at the BMF, but I have purchased medals from several members and received good advice and instruction as well. There are some stunning groups on display as well, far out of my reach but fun to look at anyway.

My small collection was the gateway to discovering the pleasures of research, this is rewarding in itself as well as a way of keeping the memory of the man behind the medals alive.

Regards,

Joseph
