I'm stumped and need help!

Maybe a cavalry uniform? I'm thinking this way due to the sabre and what looks like a'saddle' in the attached photo.

Possiblypost-87106-0-08081100-1327974471.jpg circa 1890 - 1900.

Any ideas gratefully received!!!

He is an infantry officer as that is an infantry pattern Patrol Jacket with four rows of frogging (other arms usually had at least five). Units whose officers wore an embroidered (bullion wire) 8 pointed star surmounted by a crown as a ('staff' type) forage cap badge included the Devonshire Regt and the East Surrey Regt.

He is wearing a Staff Pattern Forage Cap for a non-Royal regiment which had a black oak leaf patterned band and a netted button at top centre.

This is the officer's East Surrey Regiment forage cap badge of the period.

Brilliant image. Here is the Devon's Officers equivalent to compare. On balance I would say the OP photo looks more like Devons (based on perceived 'shape' of central device in light and shadow), what do you think?
