Sorry this isn't as clear as it might be, but I don't normally take my camera to work - had to make do with my phone...

This bar of miniatures fell out of a box in the office safe. No sign of the full-size ones. No name related to them, except, very very possibly, Hankin. Probability is that they were issued to a surgeon, RN.

Is there any way that he can be traced through back-tracking the medals? I can spot the usual GW trio.

Straight off, he's got the C.M.G. and the D.S.O., which should help narrow him down. I'll have a look-see.

Aha. That matches - another set of medals in the same box. Which is useful, but probably not these (I'll double-check tomorrow). If on the other hand there is any sign of HJJH being awarded the CMG and DSO...

I did look at that - but do they also cover foreign medals awarded to Britons?

HJJH was placed on the retired list 28/10/1927 as a Cd Wardmaster

seajane. The foreign medals are I think? Turkish with cresent moon and star, the one second from the right is an Osmanie Order, and third from the right is The order of Medjid. I could be way off on this, but I am sure a forum member will come up with the correct answer for you.

Aye Rob.

Rob, thanks, and to everyone else. I wonder who might have been awarded that particular combination.

There is one I cannot pin down - more research ongoing - but.. left to right

Companion of St Michael and St George (CMG)

Distinguished Service Order (DSO

1914-15 Star Trio with a Mention in Dispatches

Order of the Nile 5th Class

Order of the Medijide, 4th Class

Order of Osmanieh, 4th Class

Khedive's Sudan Medal 1896-1908 with Clasp

As he has two Turkish Orders and and Egyptian Order and an Egyptian campaign Medal - without an accompanying British campaign medal - must be for some service (loan? attach?) prior to WW1. There must be some trace of permission to wear in records.

I think it is a narrow period you are looking at for the senior awards, there are no jubilee or coronation medals.

I'm starting to feel that Hankin is a red herring.

1. No CMG DSO after his name in two post-WW1 entries in the LG

2. Those grades of Orders appear too high for the time for a non-officer...
